Week 17: Roto Waiver Adds

Matt Garza threw a no-hitter on Monday. It was the first no-hitter thrown by a Tampa Bay Rays pitcher. For those counting at home, that makes five total on the season. Considering the season is about three-and-a-half months old, a no-hitter is being thrown about once every three weeks. That’s crazy.
Speaking of crazy, back in 2007, the Rays and Twins made a trade. The Rays traded away outfielder Delmon Young, infielder Brendan Harris and outfielder Jason Pridie, while the Twins traded Garza, shortshop Jason Bartlett and pitcher Eduardo Morlan.
At the time, both teams viewed their players as having issues. Young had problems in the minor leagues and openly disrespected Rays manager Joe Maddon. While Garza acted out a lot and was perceived as hyper and not fully under control of his emotions.
In hindsight, perhaps it was age or maybe it is the new teams, but both players are having great years. Young is amongst the leaders in RBIs and producing well for the Twins. Garza, in addition to his no-hitter, is 11-5 with a 4.06 ERA.
It may have taken a few years for these guys to become quality professionals, but sometimes the right fit makes all the difference.
Note: I realized I wasn’t properly counting the weeks of the season, so we’re skipping 16 and this week’s adds are for week 17, which is the correct numeration)

WEEK 17 ADDS
Runs - OF Jose Tabata, Pittsburgh Pirates (12.8% owned)
Since the All-Star break, Tabata is batting .386 with a .413 OBP. He’s batting second in the lineup behind Andrew McCutchen. In his six years in the minor leagues, Tabata hit .297 and most recently hit .308 in Triple-A. In only 53 games, he had 25 steals so he’s got a lot of ability. He isn’t much of a power hitter but he gets on base, which is what makes him valuable for runs.
Home Runs - DH Luke Scott, Baltimore Orioles (50.1% owned)
Scott recently returned from a DL stint on July 19. In the following days, he’s made up for lost time. He’s got eight runs, five homers, 14 hits and 11 RBIs in the last nine days. He’s improved his batting average by 18 points and a 11-game hitting streak which ended Tuesday.
Runs Batted In – DH Jack Cust, Oakland Athletics (16.7% owned)
Cust is a boom-or-bust sort of player. He swings for the fences, strikes out a lot and will never hit for average. His production is very sporadic but in the last two weeks, he has four home runs and 11 RBI. Spot-start him against poor pitching or when he plays in hitters’ parks.
Stolen Bases - OF Nyjer Morgan, Washington Nationals (60.7% owned)
Morgan is starting to rebound and in the last two weeks, he’s hitting .317 with seven swipes. It appears Nationals manager Jim Riggleman has turned him loose on the basepaths. Morgan had five steals and was caught four times in May, six steals and caught three times in June, and now 10 steals and caught twice in July. Those are great trends.
Batting Average – OF Austin Jackson, Chicago White Sox (78.1% owned)
Jackson is better known for his speed and defense, but his bat is red hot. He’s batting .433 in the last week and even though he gets quite a few days off, his new schedule is working out for him. He is owned in the better majority of leagues but he’s been added a lot in the last week. Get him before someone else does.
Strikeouts - SP Ted Lilly, Chicago Cubs (69.7% owned)
I liked Lilly as a sleeper coming into the season but he took awhile to get healthy. His win-loss record leaves a lot to be desired at 3-8 but he’s got 24 strikeouts in his last 20 innings pitched.
Wins - SP Tommy Hunter, Texas Rangers (80% owned)
Hunter is a red-hot addition off the waiver wire right now with over 15% of leagues adding him in the past week. He’s had eight wins in his last 10 starts with no losses. He won’t get many strikeouts for you but he’s pitching great.
Saves - RP John Axford, Milwaukee Brewers (84.2% owned)
I’ve been recommending Axford for well over a month and he’s finally getting his due. With five saves in the last two weeks, he’s doing a great job. Add in that in the last month his 2.77 ERA and 1.08 WHIP are excellent and he’s being added regularly in all leagues.
ERA - SP Brett Myers, Houston Astros (36.5% owned)
Myers' percentage owned has doubled in the last week and it’s because in his last five starts, he’s only allowed seven earned runs. The difference? Fewer walks and more ground balls. This leads to easy outs and fewer base-runners, making it that much easier to win games and allow fewer runs.
WHIP - SP Madison Bumgarner, San Francisco Giants (57.9% owned)
Bumgarner has been fantastic since getting his call-up in late June. In the last month, he has a 1.87 ERA and 1.16 WHIP over 33.2 innings. Add four wins in his last four starts and he’s one of the more promising young call-ups in the majors right now.

2 Thanks again for the comment. Yeah, in the second half of the season is where you're either picking up minor league prospects who are getting their shot or streaky players who are having a good week. I'm sure you've noticed. It's tough. Cust is one of the more frustrating players out there and he's not for the faint of heart hah.
