LOST on Revis Island

Revis Island was a very lonely destination in 2009. Elite receivers like Andre Johnson, Randy Moss, Roddy White, and Reggie Wayne found it tough to feed their habit of catching passes when left alone with All-Pro Darrelle Revis. It was a breakout campaign for Revis, who established himself as the best lockdown corner in the game.
Now he's holding out to be the game's highest-paid corner, and the Jets' front office is trying its best to dig in with contract negotiations by saying that it's unlikely Revis will grace the field with his presence this season. It's the typical posturing that comes with the business side of football so Jets fans shouldn't start worrying about Revis' absence until September rolls around. Cooler heads will more than likely prevail and you can expect Revis Island back in full effect like he was last year.
Yes, there was that minor slip-up in Miami when Ted Ginn ran past him in for a 53-yard touchdown reception in Week 5. And yes, it remains to be seen if Revis can replicate his extraordinary success with a major contract dispute hanging over his head. Another factor to consider is the addition of corner Antonio Cromartie. With Revis shutting down one side of the field last season, teams like the Pats and Colts were content ignoring him to pick on Lito Sheppard and Dwight Lowery – thus the huge games by Wes Welker and Pierre Garcon (in the AFC Title game). Cromartie should help the defense overall, but it also might actually result in more balls going Revis’ direction.
Even still, when a No. 1 receiver has his ticket punched for Revis Island, fantasy owners must take notice. While I’m never going to recommend sitting Randy Moss on any given week, you have to at least take it under advisement the two weeks New England plays the Jets if you have other reliable options.
Here’s a look at some dates fantasy owners should circle on the 2010 Revis Island calendar.
Week 1 vs. Baltimore: Anquan Boldin takes over as the new No. 1 receiver for Joe Flacco. I’m a huge Boldin fan and he’ll be looking to do some damage in his Ravens debut. That should open things up for veteran Derrick Mason and Donte’ Stallworth, who missed the year due to suspension.
Week 2 vs. New England: Moss had nine catches for 58 yards and a touchdown in two games against the Jets last season. Expect Moss to be motivated in a contract year. Even if he can’t hook up with Tom Brady for the long bomb, he’ll certainly stretch the field as his deep routes will attract safety help over the top. That will open things up for Julian Edelman or Welker (if his remarkable recovery continues). Last year, Welker abused the Jets for 192 yards on 15 catches in Week 11, while Edelman burned New York for eight catches and 98 yards in his second career game in Week 2 when Welker was injured.
Week 3 at Miami: Dolphins fans have had this date circled on their calendar since the day Brandon Marshall was acquired from Denver. This will be an interesting one to watch and will be the first of many tangos between the two. Davone Bess is a sleeper target here as he’ll get plenty of looks and dumpoffs in the slot under the Jets’ heavy pressure.
Week 5 vs. Minnesota: Brett Favre makes his return to the Meadowlands, the place he deserted for yet another retirement after the 2008 season. Yes, Favre’s return isn’t official yet, but expect that announcement to come right around the end of training camp (Would you want work out twice a day in 100-degree heat if you were 40?). I’m not liking this matchup for Sidney Rice, and think Percy Harvin, if anyone, will be doing the damage from the receiver spot.
Week 8 vs. Green Bay: Greg Jennings only had a so-so year last season, and he’s a guy I won’t hesitate to sit against Revis unless he’s knocking it out of the park leading up to the game. Aaron Rodgers is the No. 1 fantasy QB this year, and he has plenty of weapons to spread the ball around to. Jermichael Finley is a guy to watch here.
Week 9 at Detroit: The Jets will look to punish Matt Stafford with heavy blitz packages, leaving him little time to find Calvin Johnson. As a Jets fan, however, I am all too aware about the same ol’ Jets routine, and this could very well be one of those games that has us all pulling our hair out afterward. It certainly wouldn’t surprise me to see one home run throw to Megatron so I’d keep CJ active.
Week 11 vs. Houston: Andre Johnson will be looking for vengeance after a silent opening day last season when Revis and the Jets limited him to four catches and 35 yards. Revis might have history on his side, but I’m certainly not telling you to sit arguably the best receiver in the game right now.
Week 12 vs. Cincinnati: After a friendly Twitter feud, Revis gave Chad Ochocinco his medicine in back-to-back games last season. Ocho was shut out in a relatively meaningless Week 17 game at the Meadowlands before a weak two-catch performance in the Wild Card round. Ochocinco will surely be talking again leading up to this game, but fantasy owners likely won’t be able to count on him on this date.
Week 13 at New England: Same story as the first Patriots game above, but Welker should be at full speed by this time. He’s a guy you want in your lineup here in the final game of the fantasy regular season. As it stands now, I’d be a little worried to have to rely on Moss here, but a lot can change between training camp and December 6. This likely will be a huge game in fantasy as well as in shaping the AFC East playoff picture.
In the standard fantasy playoffs (Weeks 14-16), Revis and the Jets do battle with Miami, Pittsburgh and Chicago – all cold-weather games. The weather will surely play a factor in these games, and it’ll be interesting to see how Marshall, Hines Ward and Devin Hester(?) perform on their three-hour tours to Revis Island.

1 Nice Job Jason. Well first off there is a little matter of like 40 million guarenteed coming in the way of Revis even playing, and it will be interesting to see how that one folds out. I am a huge Dolphins fan, but by no means an ignorant homer. I will be as interested as any to see how Marshall does against Revis. Marshall did face Nnamdi 2 times a year coming into this year and caught balls. He does have a height advantage which may help him in the redzone. Revis is a load to handle no matter what. I say Marshall's production for those games will be a little under the average he will get the rest of the season....Micah Vargo
